Reading has always been a conversation

For centuries readers have written in the margins, talked about books and passed them on. Marginalia, which means "notes in the margin", does the same from your pocket.

Today: nuanced reviews

Montaigne argued with his own book in the margins.

In Marginalia you say what you think of every book: half stars, a review and the mood and pace you read it in.

Today: share what you read

A good book always wants to be told.

Share your ratings, reviews and favorite quotes as story-ready images. And if you want to read together, start a club.

Today: your quotes and diary

Save them in your quotes and keep a diary of every book you finish, its date and how it felt.

About the app

Is Marginalia free?

Yes. Logging books, reviews, the yearly challenge, streaks, stats, clubs and color palettes are all free and ad-free.

When is it out, and on which phones?

First on Android, on Google Play. The iPhone version comes later; this page will announce launch day.

Is it in English?

Yes, fully in English and Spanish. Switch languages any time in Settings.

Does it use artificial intelligence?

No. What you see are your books and other readers' opinions. Nobody thinks for you.

Your books

How do I add a book?

Search by title, author or ISBN, or scan the barcode with your camera. Then mark it as reading, want to read, read or set aside.

Can I bring my books from Goodreads?

Yes. Export your library from Goodreads and upload it in Settings. Your books, shelves and ratings come over, with no duplicates.

Why does a book show up once if it has many editions?

Marginalia groups the translations and reprints of a work, so you never see the same book ten times. On the book page you choose your edition and its cover.

How does the yearly challenge work?

Choose how many books, pages, new authors or genres you want to read this year. The app tells you if you are on track and when you would finish at your pace.

Readers and privacy

How do spoiler-free clubs work?

The club splits the book into sections. You only see comments on the sections you have already read.

Who can see my profile and reviews?

Your profile can be public or private. If it is private, only followers you approve can see your shelf. You can also block and report.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, from Settings or from the web, whenever you want. Deleting it erases all your data.

You are early.
